수도권 인근 도시인 화양시. 인구 29만의 이 도시에서 정체불명의 전염병이 발발한다. 최초의 발병자는 개 번식사업을 하던 중년 남자. 신종플루에 걸렸던 이 남자는 병에 걸린 개에 물린 이후로 눈이 빨갛게 붓고 폐를 비롯한 온몸에서 피를 흘리는 증상을 보인다. 이 남자를 구하기 위해 출동한 119구조대원들을 중심으로 전염병이 퍼지기 시작하고 삽시간에 응급실 의사와 간호사들까지 눈이 빨갛게 변하며 며칠 만에 돌연사 한다. 응급실의 간호사 수진과 소방대원 기준은 점차 사태의 심각성을 깨닫기 시작하는데…….
알래스카에서 개썰매 레이스 ‘아이디타로드’에 한국인 최초로 참여했던 재형은 눈 폭풍 속에서 가족처럼 기르던 개들을 굶주린 야생 늑대 떼에 잃는다. 이 일을 트라우마로 지닌 채 한국의 화양으로 돌아와 산속에서 유기견 구조센터 ‘드림랜드’를 운영하는 재형. 그러나 재형에게 기르던 개 쿠키를 빼앗긴 동해의 간계로, 재형이 알래스카 개썰매 레이스에서 개들을 몰살시킨 파렴치한이라는 기사가 윤주에 의해 보도되면서 드림랜드는 문을 닫을 위기에 처한다.
‘빨간 눈’ 괴질의 발병지에서 겨우 도망쳐 나왔던 늑대개, 링고는 화양을 떠돌다가 재형의 드림랜드 근처에서 암캐 스타를 만난다. 평생 하나의 짝만 두는 늑대의 후손답게 링고는 스타가 운명의 짝임을 감지한다.
전염병은 급속도로 퍼져, 수진이 근무하는 병원에 환자들이 들이닥치기 시작하고 병원 직원들조차 죽어나가기 시작한다. 119구조대원 기준은 자신도 빨간 눈 괴질의 보균자인지도 모른다는 생각에 집에 돌아가지도 못한 채 아내와 딸을 화양시 밖으로 내보내려 한다. 그러나 화양시에서 발발한 전염병이 서울을 포함한 다른 곳으로 퍼져나가지 못하게 국가는 사실상 계엄령에 가까운 국가비상사태를 선포하고 군대를 동원하여 도시를 봉쇄한다. 결국 화양은 점차 이성을 잃은 무간지옥이 되어간다…….

 

가장 증오했던 대상을 구원하고, 가장 혐오했던 대상을 사랑하게 되는 역설. 그 속에 구원의 비밀이 숨어 있다.     정유정 작가의 신작이 올해 나온다는 얘기를 어디서 들었을까요? 2월에 서울 북촌 나들이 했을 때 공선옥 작가를 우연히 봤습니다. 공작가님은 내 새책이 봄에 나온다. 가제로 지은 제목은 이러는데 나오면 많이 읽어달라….생뚱스럽게 공선옥 작가가 광주로 다시 이사왔다는 말을 듣고서는 덧붙여서 정유정 작가 책도 봄에 나온다는데요? 혹시 만나본 적 있으세요? 이런 생뚱한 질문을 했답니다. 그러자 공작가님이 아…네.. 봄에 새 책 나온다고 하데요….

    와 작가를 실제로 만나니 이런 대화도 하고…. 그러면서 나도 광주 사는데 정유정 작가를 한 번이라도 봤으면 좋겠다…. 이런 욕심이 생겼습니다. 내 인생의 스프링캠프는 3권을 사서는 조카뻘 되는 학생들에게 보냈거든요. 정말 기다리다가 28을 받고서는 벌벌 떨면서 읽었습니다. 책을 놓을 수 없다는 것과 너무 빨리 읽힌다는 것과 무섭다는 것과…..한 번 더 읽으려고 합니다. 그런데요 광주에서 사인회 같은거 계획없으신가요?

    저도 큰 개를 좋아하는데요… 마침 책을 읽으면서 시베리안 허스키, 말랴뮤트, 팀버울프, 핏볼, 스피츠… 개 이름을 외우고 그려보았습니다.
    한 치의 흐트러짐도 없는듯한 글을 읽으면서 전에 조르주 심농의 인터뷰 내용이 떠올랐습니다.
    조르주 심농이라는 작가가 글을 써놓고서는

    형용사, 부사, 단지 어떤 효과를 내기 위해서만 존재하는 모든 단어, 단지 문장을 위해서만 존재하는 모든 문장, 아름답기만 한 문장은 잘라 버립니다. 내 소설 속에서 그런 것을 하나라도, 발견하면, 없애버리죠.
    이런 말을 했는데요…. 꼭 정유정 작가가 하는 말 같아요.
    그런데요, 대가들은 다 같은가 봅니다. 조정래작가님도 이런 말을 했어요.

    한 문장, 한 문장을 쓸 때마다 세 번씩 생각하고 쓰는 것입니다.
    벽돌 한 장, 한 장이 쌓여 큰 건물을 이루어내는 이치와 같습니다.
    금 간 벽돌, 멍이 든 벽돌, 설구워진 벽돌이 중간 중간에 끼어들면 어떻게 되겠습니까?
    소설의 문장 하나라도 그 어떤 흠이나 모자람 없이 완벽하게 연결 되어야 합니다.
    옷감을 짜는 데 한 오라기의 실이라도 잘못 섞이게 되면
    그 꽃무늬는 망치게 되는 것과 꼭 같습니다.

    정유정 작가의 글을 읽다보면 조르주 심농, 조정래, 정유정, 대가들의 작업은 다 같은가보다…..이런 생각이 듭니다. 대단합니다.

    제가 처음으로 정유정 작가님의 책을 접한건 7살무렵 내 인생의 스프링캠프 였습니다.
    광고에 나와 대수롭지 않게 여기고 넘어갔으나
    초등학교 5학년때 서점에서 보고는
    어? 이거 광고에서 나온거 아니야? 하고 곧장 집어들었죠
    그리고 쉴틈없는 이야기전개 때문에 어린나이에 밤을 새서 읽었답니다. 그리곤 작가님 팬이 됬지요.
    내 심장을 쏴라,7년의밤,28 이 세권을 모두 구입하곤
    전부 다 읽곤 현재 28을 읽고 있답니다.
    화양시 지도도 첨부 됬으면 좋으련만…
    아쉬워도 어쩔수 없지요.
    머리속에 그려 나가는 수밖에..
    광주 사인회 일정 잡히면 꼭 가고 싶습니다
    주말이면 좋겠네요..ㅎㅎ 학생이라 시간이 넉넉치 못하거든요.
    그럼 다음 신작 기대하겠습니다!
    2년 간격으로 신작 내시면 제가 성인이 될때까지 볼수 있으리라 기대합니다.

    OST 따로 구매 할 순 없나요?
    지난 서울국제도서전때 책을 구매했는데 그 당시엔 OST가 안나왔는데 지금은 나왔더라구요..
    OST 들어보니 좋던데 따로 소장하고 싶네요..

    정유정 작가님의 소설을 너무 좋아하는 팬입니다. 여성작가라고 느껴지지 않을 정도의 강한 필력과 묘사가 너무 멋있습니다. ^^ 저는 지금 고등학교 도서관에서 사서교사로 근무하고 있는데요,, 작가님의 소설을 우리 학생들도 너무 좋아하고 인기도서로 꾸준히 읽고 있습니다. 혹시나 학교쪽으로는 강연 나오실 계획 없으신지 궁금합니다.. 그럼 수고하세요 ^^
